Can Canva Open an AI File?

Last updated on September 27, 2022 @ 9:25 pm

Canva is a user-friendly graphic design tool that is beloved by many small businesses and non-designers for its simple drag-and-drop interface and wide range of pre-made templates. But one thing Canva cannot do is open an AI file.

Adobe Illustrator is the industry standard for vector graphic design, and AI files are its native format. That means if you receive an AI file from a client or collaborator, you’ll need to open it in Illustrator to make any edits.

Of course, not everyone has Illustrator, which can be expensive to purchase outright. That’s where Canva comes in – it’s much cheaper than Illustrator, and still relatively simple to use. So what do you do when you need to edit an AI file but don’t have Illustrator?

There are a few different options available to you. The first is to find a friend or colleague who does have Illustrator and ask them to open the file for you. This is usually the quickest and easiest solution.

If that’s not possible, or you want to be able to open AI files yourself in the future, there are a few ways to get around the issue. One is to use Adobe Creative Cloud’s free trial period to download and use Illustrator for a limited time. Another is to find an alternative vector graphic design program that can open AI files, such as Inkscape (which is free) or Affinity Designer ($49.99).

So while Canva may be a great option for simple graphic design needs, it’s not going to be much help when it comes to opening and editing AI files.
