Can Figma Do 3D?

Last updated on September 28, 2022 @ 8:46 pm

Figma has been making waves in the design world as of late. The vector drawing and animation app has been used by some of the biggest names in the industry, including Google, Facebook, and Airbnb. While Figma is primarily known for its 2D capabilities, there have been some recent developments that suggest that the app may soon be able to do 3D.

Figma recently released a new beta version of the app that includes a 3D transform tool. This tool allows users to rotate, scale, and move objects in three-dimensional space. While the tool is still in its early stages and is not yet available to all users, it is a promising sign that Figma may soon be able to do 3D.

PRO TIP: 3D in Figma is currently in beta and is not yet ready for production use. Use at your own risk!

In addition to the 3D transform tool, Figma has also partnered with Google to create a new 3D file format called .f3d. This file format will allow users to view their Figma designs in three dimensions. Google has said that .f3d files will be compatible with all of their products, including SketchUp and Tilt Brush.

While there are no concrete plans to add full 3D capabilities to Figma, these recent developments suggest that it is something that the team is exploring. With the addition of the 3D transform tool and .f3d file format, it seems only a matter of time before Figma is able to do 3D.
