Can I Cancel a Contract on UpWork?

Last updated on September 30, 2022 @ 11:27 am

When you sign a contract on UpWork, you’re agreeing to the terms set forth by both you and the client. This means that, in most cases, you can’t cancel the contract once it’s been signed. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule.

If you and the client have mutually agreed to cancel the contract, then you can do so without any penalties. This is typically done if the project is no longer feasible, or if both parties agree that it’s not a good fit. If this is the case, simply reach out to the client and let them know that you’d like to cancel the contract.

PRO TIP: If you cancel a contract on Upwork, you may be subject to a cancellation fee. Additionally, your account may be suspended or terminated if you cancel too many contracts.

Another exception is if the client has violated the terms of the contract. This could be anything from not paying on time, to requesting work outside of the scope of what was agreed upon. If you believe that the client has violated the contract, you can reach out to UpWork support and they will help mediate the situation.

Finally, if there are extenuating circumstances (such as illness or a death in the family), you can reach out to UpWork support and they may be able to cancel the contract on your behalf. However, this is not guaranteed and is up to UpWork’s discretion.

In most cases, it’s not possible to cancel a contract on UpWork once it’s been signed. If you and the client have mutually agreed to cancel the contract, or if the client has violated the terms of the contract, you may be able to do so without any penalties.
