Can I Import AI Files Into Figma?

Last updated on December 4, 2022 @ 8:25 am

Figma is a vector graphics editor and design tool, which is primarily used by UX designers and product managers in the design process. The software is mainly web-based, with a native app for macOS and Windows.

One of Figma’s key features is its ease of use in team collaboration, as it allows multiple users to work on the same design file at the same time.

So, can you import AI files into Figma? The answer is yes! Figma supports the editing of AI (Adobe Illustrator) design files.

First, you need to open your AI file in Adobe Xd. To do this, open your Adobe Xd application. Go to File > Open from Your Computer.

Browse for the AI file that you want to import in Figma, select then click on “Open”.

Once done, click on the title of the frame, “Artboard 1”.

Right-click on it, then select “Copy SVG Code”.

NOTE: Selecting the “Copy” only option will only transfer an image of your design in Figma and you won’t be able to edit the design.

Now go to the Figma application, right-click on an open design canvas and select “Paste here”.

Figma will then read the file, which you can edit in the software. You can check this from the layers on the left side.

PRO TIP: There is currently no way to import AI files directly into Figma. However, you can import your AI file into Adobe Xd, then copy the SVG code and paste it into Figma to be able to edit.

One thing to keep in mind is that not all AI features are supported in Figma. So, if you’re planning on importing an AI file into Figma, make sure to check that all the features you need are supported first. Otherwise, you may not be able to edit your design as you want to.

Overall, importing AI files into Figma is a simple process that can be done by anyone. Just make sure to check that all the features you need are supported before you begin.
