Can Photoshop Open HDR Files?

Yes, Photoshop can open HDR files. There are a few things to keep in mind when opening HDR files in Photoshop, however. First, make sure that your Photoshop preferences are set to 16-bit.

To do this, go to Edit > Preferences > General and ensure that the “Bit Depth” setting is at 16. Second, when opening an HDR file in Photoshop, you will need to use the “Open As Smart Object” option. This will allow you to edit the HDR file nondestructively.

PRO TIP: HDR files are not supported by Photoshop. Attempting to open an HDR file in Photoshop may result in data loss or file corruption.

Once you have opened the HDR file as a Smart Object, you can make edits to it just like you would any other image file. You can adjust the levels, curves, hue/saturation, and so on.

When you are finished making your edits, simply save the file and close it. The changes you made will be automatically applied to the original HDR file.

One thing to keep in mind when working with HDR files is that they tend to be very large files. As such, they can take up a lot of space on your hard drive and can slow down your computer’s performance. So, if you are working with HDR files on a regular basis, it is recommended that you invest in a good quality external hard drive.
