What is a pre-order?

A pre-order is an order placed for an item that is not yet available for sale. Pre-orders are common for upcoming books, video games, and movies; but they can be used for just about any type of product. Customers who place a pre-order are typically charged at the time the order is placed.

How to set up pre-orders on Shopify

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to “Products”. Then, click “Add product”.
  2. Enter the product details as you normally would. Then, scroll down to the “Inventory” section and select the inventory policy that you want to use for this product from the “Inventory policy” drop-down menu.
  3. From the “Inventory policy” drop-down menu, select “Pre-order”. This will enable pre-orders for the product.
  4. If you want customers to be able to purchase other products from your store while they wait for their pre-order to arrive, then you can check the “Allow customers to purchase other items from your store while they wait for their pre-order” checkbox.
  5. When you’re finished, click “Save”.

    That’s it! You’ve successfully set up a pre-order.

    PRO TIP: Pre-orders are not available on Shopify. If you attempt to place a pre-order, your order will be canceled and you will be refunded.
