Can You Open Illustrator Files in Figma?

You can’t open an Illustrator file directly in Figma. However, there are a few ways you can work with your AI files in Figma.

If you’re working with a vector file, you can export your AI file as an SVG and then upload it to Figma. Once it’s uploaded, you’ll be able to edit the file just like any other asset in your project.

You can also export your AI file as a PNG or JPG. This is helpful if you’re working with a complex file that would be difficult to recreate in Figma.

To do this, open your AI file and go to File > Export > Export As. Choose PNG or JPG from the dropdown menu and make sure the artboard is selected in the Export All dialog box. Click Export and choose where you’d like to save the file.

PRO TIP: If you are trying to open an Adobe Illustrator (.ai) file in Figma, it will not work. Adobe Illustrator and Figma use different file formats and are not compatible with each other.

Once the file is exported, go to File > Open from your Figma dashboard and select the image file. It will open as a new frame that you can edit like any other asset in your project.

The best way to work with Illustrator files in Figma is to use our integration with Adobe Creative Cloud Libraries. With this integration, you can access your Libraries assets directly in Figma. To do this, go to File > Place from CC Libraries and sign in with your Adobe ID.

Once you’re signed in, you’ll see all of the Libraries that are available to you. Select the one you want to use and then browse through the assets. When you find one you want to use, simply drag it onto your canvas.

Figma’s Creative Cloud Libraries integration is the best way to work with Illustrator files because it allows you to access your assets directly from within Figma. You can also export your AI files as SVGs, PNGs, or JPGs and upload them into Figma manually.
