Do I Need to Send UpWork a 1099?

As an independent contractor, you are responsible for paying your own taxes. This includes self-employment tax and income tax. When you do work for a client through UpWork, they are not responsible for withholding taxes from your earnings.

The IRS requires that companies report earnings paid to contractors if those earnings exceed $600 in a calendar year. For this reason, UpWork will send you a 1099-MISC form if your total earnings with a client exceed $600 in a year. You can find more information on the 1099-MISC form and how to file it here:

PRO TIP: If you are an independent contractor working with Upwork, you are not considered an employee of Upwork and therefore will not receive a 1099 form from us. You are responsible for paying your own taxes and we recommend that you consult with a tax advisor to determine if you need to send in a 1099 form.

If you have any questions about whether or not you need to file a 1099-MISC, you should consult with a tax professional.
