Do you pay taxes on UpWork?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 9:24 pm

UpWork is a platform where entrepreneurs can find work from freelancers. Because UpWork is a remote work platform, there is a question of whether or not freelancers are considered to be employees, and if so, whether they are taxed as such.

There is no definitive answer to this question. In general, it is generally accepted that freelancers are considered self-employed, and as such, they are responsible for paying their own taxes.

PRO TIP: If you are an independent contractor working through Upwork, you are responsible for paying your own taxes. Upwork will not withhold taxes from your earnings, so it is important to set aside money throughout the year to ensure that you have enough to cover your tax bill when it is due.

However, this is not always the case, and in some cases, freelancers may be considered employees, and as such, may be entitled to benefits such as health insurance and retirement savings.

It is important to consult with a tax specialist to determine whether or not you are liable for paying taxes on your income from freelancing on UpWork.
