Does DigitalOcean allow SMTP?

Last updated on December 25, 2022 @ 8:38 am

In our connected world, unsolicited, unwelcome, and occasionally actually malicious communications are a constant. Postal mail, email, phone, and SMS are all vulnerable to abuse by those with bad intentions and by those looking to profit from the current spam economy. In every medium used by spammers, service providers fight a never-ending battle against the abuse of their platforms.

SMTP is disabled by default

DigitalOcean discovered that the ratio of spammers is alarmingly high compared to the ratio of those building in the cloud with legitimate purposes. Due to this fact, the majority of major cloud service providers disable SMTP by default as one of their spam prevention strategies. Today, DigitalOcean will start doing the same on new accounts as part of our own spam prevention strategies.

As a result, DigitalOcean thinks that turning off SMTP for new signups is a smart move in the ongoing chess game on the internet against spammers.

All new accounts will now be subject to the new disabled-by-default SMTP policy as of June 22, 2022. Although the Security team will continue to keep an eye on spam activity, They believe that making this choice will help their customers and the larger internet community in their joint effort to reduce spam.
