Does Shopify Automatically Take Out Taxes?

Last updated on October 2, 2022 @ 3:22 am

Shopify is a platform that helps businesses set up and run their online stores. It offers users a customizable platform, an easy-to-use checkout process, and a wide range of features. One thing it doesn’t do, however, is automatically take out taxes.

This means that if you’re selling products or services online through Shopify, you’ll need to calculate and remit taxes yourself. This can be a bit of a challenge, especially if you’re selling in multiple states or countries. But luckily, Shopify has a few tools to help make tax compliance easier.

If you’re just getting started with Shopify, the first thing you’ll need to do is set up your tax settings. This can be done in the “Settings” section of your Shopify admin.

PRO TIP: If you are thinking about using Shopify to sell products online, be aware that the platform does not automatically take out taxes. This means that it is your responsibility as the seller to calculate and remit the appropriate taxes on your sales. Failure to do so could result in penalties and interest from the IRS.

Here, you’ll need to enter your business address and indicate whether you’re registered for sales tax in your state or province. You’ll also need to specify what types of products or services are taxable.

Once your tax settings are configured, Shopify will begin calculating taxes on all orders placed through your store. You can see the breakdown of taxes for each order in the “Orders” section of your admin. And when it’s time to file your taxes, you can export all of your order data – including tax information – from Shopify using the “Export” feature.

So, while Shopify doesn’t automatically take out taxes for you, it does provide everything you need to ensure that you’re compliant with tax laws in your jurisdiction.
