Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 11:01 pm

Shopify is a Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It is also the name of its proprietary e-commerce platform for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems.

Shopify offers online retailers a suite of services “including payments, marketing, shipping and customer engagement tools to simplify the process of running an online store for small merchants. ”

Shopify was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after attempting to open an online store using Yahoo! Store.

Lütke, a computer programmer by trade, was particularly intrigued by the problem of setting up an online store so he created his own solution. Weinand and Lake recruited Lütke to work on their project full time and eventually brought him on as CEO.

Since its launch in 2006, Shopify has grown to become one of the most popular e-commerce platforms with over 175,000 active stores using its platform today. In 2014, Shopify announced that it had processed over $10 billion in sales through its platform with $1 billion coming from mobile devices.
