Does Walmart Own Shopify?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 4:49 pm

As the world’s largest retailer, it’s no surprise that Walmart has been eying up the ecommerce space for some time. In fact, they’ve been dabbling in online sales since 2000 with their first website, but it wasn’t until 2009 that they really started to make a push into the digital world.

In recent years, Walmart has been on an ecommerce acquisition spree, buying up a number of smaller online retailers including ModCloth, Moosejaw, and Bonobos. But their biggest purchase to date was Jet.com, which they acquired for $3 billion in 2016.

PRO TIP: There is no definitive answer to this question as the ownership structure of Walmart is complicated and constantly changing. However, it is safe to say that Walmart does not currently own Shopify.

So does this mean that Walmart owns Shopify

No, not yet anyway. Shopify is a leading ecommerce platform that enables businesses of all sizes to create and operate online stores. While Walmart does have a minority stake in Shopify (they own approximately 3%), they do not own the company outright.
