When you create a website with Wix, you automatically agree to our Terms of Use. This document outlines everything you can and can’t do with your website, including what happens to your content if you violate our terms. One important section of our Terms of Use is called “Content on the Services.” It states:
“You retain all ownership rights in the Content that you post on the Services. By displaying or publishing (“posting”) any Content on or through the Services, you hereby grant to Wix a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, reproduce, process, adapt, modify, publish, transmit, display and distribute such Content in any and all media or distribution methods (now known or later developed).
This license will exist for as long as your Content remains on the Services. ”
In other words, when you post content on your Wix site, you give us permission to use it in connection with operating our platform. But you still own the rights to your content – you can do whatever you want with it outside of the Wix platform.
Things To Keep In Mind
There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to content ownership on Wix:
- We Can Remove Your Content If You Violate Our Terms
If you violate our Terms of Use – for example, by posting pornographic material or using hate speech – we have the right to remove your content from our platform. We also have the right to suspend or delete your account entirely.
- You’re Responsible For Any Copyrighted Material You Post
If you post copyrighted material on your website without the copyright holder’s permission, you could be violating the law. This could lead to legal action against you – not from us, but from the copyright holder.
- We Won’t Sell Your Content Without Your Permission
Contrary to popular belief, we don’t sell our users’ content. We respect your ownership rights and will never sell your content without your permission.
- You Can Leave Wix Whenever You Want – And Take Your Content With You
If you decide to leave Wix, we make it easy for you to take your content with you. Just download a .zip file of all your site data and save it to your computer.
