How Do I Add a Discount to an Abandoned Cart on Shopify?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 7:31 pm

If you’re running a Shopify store, you know how important it is to recover abandoned carts. In fact, according to Baymard Institute, the average shopping cart abandonment rate is 69.23%. That means that nearly 7 out of 10 people who add items to their cart end up leaving without completing the purchase.

There are a number of strategies you can use to try and recover these abandonments, but one of the most effective is to offer a discount. By offering a discount, you can incentivize people to complete their purchase, and recoup some of the revenue that would have been lost otherwise.

In this article, we’ll show you how to add a discount to an abandoned cart on Shopify. We’ll also provide some tips on what kind of discount to offer and when to offer it.

Adding a Discount to an Abandoned Cart

The first thing you need to do is create a discount code in your Shopify admin. To do this, go to Discounts (under Sales Channel in the left-hand menu), and then click on Create Discount.

From there, you’ll need to fill out some information about your discount. The most important fields are:

Discount type: This is where you choose what kind of discount you want to offer. You can choose between a percentage off, fixed amount off, or free shipping. For abandoned cart discounts, we recommend either a percentage off or free shipping. Discount value: This is where you enter the actual value of the discount. For percentage off discounts, enter the percentage here (e.g., 10%).

For fixed amount off or free shipping discounts, enter the dollar amount here (e., $10). Minimum purchase amount: This is the minimum amount that someone must spend in order for the discount to be applied. You can leave this blank if you don’t want to set a minimum. Uses per customer: This is the number of times that each customer can use the discount code. Again, you can leave this blank if you don’t want to set a limit.

PRO TIP: If you are considering adding a discount to an abandoned cart on Shopify, be aware that this may result in decreased sales. In some cases, it may be better to leave the cart as-is and let the customer come back to finish their purchase.

Once you’ve filled out all the fields, click Save at the bottom of the page and your discount will be created!

Now that your discount is created, you need to add it to your abandoned cart email campaign so that people will actually see and use it. To do this, go back to Discounts in your Shopify admin and click on Edit next to your newly created discount code.

On the Edit Discount page, scroll down until you see the Add Discount Code To Campaigns section. Here, select any email campaigns that you want the discount code added to from the drop-down menu and then click Save at the bottom of the page:

And that’s it! Your discount code will now be automatically added to any abandoned cart emails that are sent out from your store.

When & What Kind of Discount Should You Offer? As we mentioned earlier, offering a discount is one of the best ways to recover an abandoned cart.

But what kind of discount should you offer? And when should you offer it? Let’s take a look at some best practices for both questions:

For abandoned cart discounts, we recommend either a percentage off or free shipping. These types of discounts have been shown to be effective in getting people to complete their purchase.

As for when to offer the discount, it’s generally best practice to send out your first email within an hour or two of abandonment (before they forget about their cart entirely). For subsequent emails, we recommend waiting 24-48 hours between each email in your campaign
