Assuming you have a layer with some type of design on it that you want to turn into a pattern, there are only a few steps to complete in order to add the pattern to your layer.

1. Select the layer with the design that you want to turn into a pattern.

2. Right-click on the layer and select “Duplicate Layer.”

3. A new dialog box will pop up. In the “Destination” field, select “New…” This will create a new document that will hold our pattern.

4. Click “OK” and our new document will open up.

5. Go to Edit > Define Pattern.

6. A dialog box will pop up asking you to name your new pattern. Give it a name and click “OK.”

7. Close out of this document (you can do this by going to File > Close, or by clicking the little x in the top right corner).

8. Go back to the document that you want to apply the pattern to.

9.

Create a new layer by going to Layer > New > Layer.

10. Now go to Edit > Fill.

11. A dialog box will pop up giving you various options on how you’d like to fill this layer.

12.: In the “Use” field, select “Pattern” from the drop down menu.
13.: Your patterns will be displayed in the box below.

PRO TIP: If you are not familiar with Photoshop, or are not comfortable using complex tools, then you may want to avoid adding patterns to layers. Patterned layers can be tricky to work with, and if you’re not careful, you can end up with a mess.
