How Do I Bill a Client on UpWork?

Last updated on September 30, 2022 @ 10:42 am

As a freelancer, you are in control of how you want to get paid by your clients. UpWork offers two different ways to get paid: hourly or fixed-price. With hourly payments, you get paid for the time you work on an hourly basis. You can use the UpWork Desktop App to track your hours, or you can manually add your hours in the Work Diary.

If you choose to be paid hourly, you will also need to set up a weekly limit so that your client knows how many hours they are paying for. Fixed-price payments are for projects with a specific end date and budget. With fixed-price payments, you and your client agree on a price before you start work. Once the project is complete, the client will pay the agreed-upon amount. You can also choose to be paid through UpWork’s SafePay Escrow system, which holds funds until you complete milestones or the project is complete.

PRO TIP: If you are a freelancer working on Upwork, it is important that you understand how to bill your clients correctly. If you do not bill your clients correctly, you may end up not being paid for your work, or worse, getting banned from the site. Here are some tips to help you bill your clients correctly:

1. Make sure that you have a clear agreement with your client about what work will be done and how much it will cost. This agreement should be in writing (email is fine) so that there is no confusion later on.

2. Once the work is completed, send an invoice to your client detailing the work that was done and how much it will cost. Be sure to include your Upwork user ID on the invoice so that the client can easily find and pay you.

3. If your client does not pay within 14 days, follow up with them to remind them about the outstanding invoice. You can also contact Upwork support to help mediate the situation if necessary.

4. When billing hourly, make sure that you accurately track your time using the Upwork time tracker tool. This tool takes screenshots of your work so that clients can see exactly how long you worked on their project.

To invoice a client on UpWork, first go to the My Jobs tab and find the job in question. Then click on the More button and select Invoice Client from the dropdown menu. On the next page, select whether you want to create a new invoice or use an existing template. If you are creating a new invoice, fill out the necessary information such as invoice date, due date, terms, and itemized charges.

You can also add a message to your client on the invoice. Once you are finished, click Send Invoice. Your client will then receive an email notification with a link to view and pay the invoice.

Conclusion:

Invoicing clients on UpWork is simple and straightforward. You have the option of choosing between hourly and fixed-price payments, and can also use UpWork’s SafePay Escrow system if desired.

To generate an invoice, simply go to the My Jobs tab and click on More > Invoice Client. From there, fill out the necessary information and click Send Invoice. Your client will then be notified via email and given instructions on how to view and pay the invoice.
