How Do I Burn With WiX?

Last updated on September 30, 2022 @ 8:56 pm

If you’re looking to create an installer for your Windows application, you might be wondering how to burn with WiX. WiX is a toolset that allows you to create Windows installation packages from XML source code.

In order to burn with WiX, you’ll need to first install the WiX toolset on your computer. Once you have WiX installed, you can use the “candle” and “light” utilities to compile your XML source code into a Windows Installer (.msi) file.

GREAT NEWS:

Exciting update! We've collaborated with Wix to offer WBI users with a free plan for all website creation needs - Explore the details here.

PRO TIP: If you are considering using WiX to create an installer for your application, be aware that there is a potential for burn.exe (the WiX bootstrapper) to cause data loss. This is because burn.exe will extract all of the files from the .wixmsp file and place them in a temporary directory. If any of these files are in use by your application, they will be locked and cannot be updated. As a result, when your application attempts to update these files, it will fail and data loss may occur.

Once you have your .msi file, you can use the “burn” utility to create an ISO image or a bootable USB drive. You can also use the “burn” utility to create a Windows Installer package (.msi) file that can be deployed using Group Policy or Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager.

So, if you’re looking to create a Windows installation package from XML source code, the first thing you’ll need to do is install the WiX toolset on your computer. Finally, you can use the “burn” utility to create an ISO image or a bootable USB drive.
