How Do I Create a Design Template in Canva?

As a non-designer, I often find myself in need of design templates for my work. Whether it’s a simple flyer or an elaborate presentation, starting with a template helps me get my ideas down quickly and efficiently.

Canva is a great tool for creating design templates, and it’s free to use! Here’s how to get started:

First, create a free account on Canva. You’ll be prompted to choose a password and provide your email address. Once you’re logged in, you’ll be taken to the main dashboard.

On the left-hand side of the screen, you’ll see a menu of options. Under “Create a Design,” select “Custom Dimensions. ”

This will bring up a blank canvas. Canva offers preset dimensions for various design types (e.g., Facebook cover photo, Twitter header, business card), but you can also create your own custom dimensions. For this example, we’ll create a design template for a blog post featured image.

In the “Width” field, enter 1000 pixels. In the “Height” field, enter 500 pixels.

Then click “Create Design. ”

You’ll be taken to your blank canvas. On the left-hand side of the screen, you’ll see the same menu of options.

This time, under “Elements,” select “Uploads. ”

This will bring up a file explorer window. Find the image you want to use as your featured image and click “Open.” Your image will appear on the canvas.

To add text to your image, select “Text” from the menu of options on the left-hand side of the screen. This will bring up a variety of text boxes that you can add to your design. For this example, we’ll add a title and subtitle.

Click on the text box that says “Add heading text here.” Type in your title and then use the formatting options (e., font size, color) to style your text as desired. When you’re finished, click outside of the text box.

To add a subtitle, select the text box that says “Add body text here.” Type in your subtitle and then style it as desired.

To save your design template, select “File” from the top menu and then choose “Download.” From the drop-down menu that appears, select “JPEG.”
