How Do I Create a Product Category in WooCommerce?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 2:01 pm

When you are ready to add products to your WooCommerce store, the first thing you need to do is create product categories. By default, WooCommerce will create a category for you called “Uncategorized”. You can leave this category as is, or you can add products to it. But chances are, you will want to create your own categories that better match your products and business.

Creating product categories in WooCommerce is easy. Simply go to WooCommerce > Products > Categories. From here, you will see a list of any existing categories, as well as a form where you can add a new category.

To add a new category, start by entering the name of the category. Then, if you want, you can add a description. Next, choose whether this category should be visible on your shop page. By default, new categories are set to “hidden”, so make sure you change this setting if you want customers to be able to see and shop by this category.

If you have created any parent categories, you will also see a dropdown menu here where you can select the parent for this new child category. For example, if you are creating a category for “men’s shirts”, you might want to set the parent as “men’s clothing”.

PRO TIP: When creating a product category in WooCommerce, be sure to set the products per page and product order options. Otherwise, your products may not appear properly on your website.

After filling in the name and optional description and setting the visibility of the category, click on the “Add New Category” button to save your changes.

That’s all there is to it! Creating product categories in WooCommerce is quick and easy.

Creating product categories in WooCommerce is simple and straightforward. Just go to WooCommerce > Products > Categories and fill in the name and optional description fields before setting the visibility of the category. After that, click on the “Add New Category” button to save your changes.
