How Do I Create an Icon Plugin in Figma?

Last updated on December 23, 2022 @ 12:26 pm

Creating an icon plugin for Figma is a relatively simple process that can be completed in just a few minutes. There are two primary methods for creating an icon plugin:

The first method is to use the Figma Plugin API. This method requires that you have a basic understanding of JavaScript and the Figma Plugin API. You can find more information about the Figma Plugin API here: https://www.figma.com/plugin-docs/api/

The second method is to use an existing icon plugin as a starting point. This method is less technical and does not require any knowledge of JavaScript. You can find a list of existing icon plugins here:
https://www.figma.com/community/category/icons

Once you have selected a method, follow the instructions below to create your icon plugin.

Instructions:

1. Choose a method (Figma Plugin API or existing icon plugin)

2. If using the Figma Plugin API, create a new file and save it as “[your-plugin-name].js

3. If using an existing icon plugin, download the source code for the plugin and unzip it into a new folder

4. In your text editor, open the “manifest.json” file and update the “id” field to “[your-plugin-name]

5. Save your changes and close the file

6. If using the Figma Plugin API, copy your “token” from https://www.figma.com/developers/apps
and paste it into the “token” field in the “manifest.json” file. If using an existing icon plugin, no further action is required at this step.

7. Save your changes and close the file

8. Test your plugin by opening Figma and selecting “Plugins > [Your Plugin Name] > [Your Icon]

9. If using the Figma Plugin API, you will need to rebuild your plugin each time you make changes. To do this, select “Plugins > Development > [Your Plugin Name] > Build” from the menu bar If using an existing icon plugin, changes will be automatically saved as you make them

10. When you are finished developing your plugin, select “Publish > [Your Plugin Name]” from the menu bar to publish it to the Figma community
