How do I enable Google Cloud Shell?

Last updated on September 25, 2022 @ 8:56 pm

Google Cloud Shell is a desktop environment that enables you to work with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) from your desktop. You can use Cloud Shell to run the gcloud command-line tool, to access Google Cloud Platform resources, and to run your own GCP applications.

To enable Cloud Shell, you first need to set up your Google Cloud Platform account. After you have set up your account, you can visit the Cloud Shell page on the Google Cloud Platform website and click the Enable button.

PRO TIP: If you are not a developer or administrator, Google Cloud Shell should not be enabled. Enabling Google Cloud Shell gives developers and administrators full access to your Google Cloud Platform account and resources. This could potentially lead to data loss or theft, and could also result in unexpected charges on your account.

Once Cloud Shell is enabled, you can launch it by visiting the Cloud Shell page on the Google Cloud Platform website and clicking the Launch button. Cloud Shell will open a new window in your default browser.

You can also open Cloud Shell by using the Google Cloud Platform Command Line Interface (GCLI). To launch GCLI, type gcloud shell at the command line.

Cloud Shell is a powerful tool that you can use to access your GCP resources and to run your own GCP applications. If you are new to GCP, Cloud Shell can be a helpful way to get started.
