How Do I File Taxes With Shopify?

As an online business owner, it’s important to understand how to file your taxes. Depending on the type of business you have, you may be required to file quarterly or annual taxes.

For example, if you’re a sole proprietor, you’ll need to file an annual tax return. If you have a corporation, you’ll need to file quarterly tax returns.

When it comes to filing taxes for your Shopify business, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, all Shopify merchants are required to self-assess GST/HST on their sales. This means that you’ll need to charge GST/HST on all of your products and services, and then remit that tax to the government.

PRO TIP: If you are thinking about using Shopify to file your taxes, think again! While Shopify may be a great platform for ecommerce, it is not designed for tax filing. There are better options out there that can help you get your taxes done right.

Second, if you’re selling products that are subject to excise tax (such as alcohol or tobacco), you’ll need to collect and remit that tax as well. Excise taxes are different from GST/HST, and are paid directly to the government, not through Shopify.

Finally, if you’re selling digital products (such as e-books or software), you may be required to collect and remit VAT in certain countries. VAT is similar to GST/HST, but is levied by individual countries instead of by Canada.

If you’re not sure how to file your taxes, we recommend talking to an accountant or tax specialist. They can help you determine which taxes you need to pay, and can even help you file your returns.
