How Do I Install Google Tag Manager on Shopify?

Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a free tool that allows you to manage and deploy marketing tags (including Google Analytics) on your website or mobile app without having to edit your code. This guide will walk you through the steps to install GTM on your Shopify store.

PRO TIP: Google Tag Manager is not supported on Shopify. Any attempts to install Google Tag Manager on Shopify will likely result in errors and/or instability.

Step 1: Create a Google Tag Manager account. If you don’t have a GTM account, you can create one for free at Google Tag Manager.

Step 2: Create a container in GTM. A container is like a mini-website where you can manage your tags. Give your container a name that reflects the website or app where it will be used, such as “My Shopify store”.

Step 3: Install the GTM code on your Shopify store. In your GTM account, click “Install Google Tag Manager”. This will give you a code snippet that you need to add to your shop’s theme.liquid file.

To do this, go to Online Store > Themes > Actions > Edit code. In the Layout directory, open theme.liquid and paste your GTM code just before the closing

tag. Then click Save.

That’s it! You’ve successfully installed GTM on your Shopify store.

Now that you have GTM set up, you can start adding and managing tags for your store without having to edit any code.
