Assuming you’re using a self-hosted WordPress site (WordPress.org), you’ll first need to install the WooCommerce plugin. For more detailed instructions, see our guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.
Once you have installed and activated WooCommerce, you’ll be taken to the WooCommerce Setup Wizard. We recommend completing the setup wizard, but if you prefer to set things up yourself, feel free to skip it.
Once you’ve completed the setup wizard or skipped it altogether, it’s time to start adding products to your WooCommerce store. Before we do that, though, let’s take a look at how to add and manage product categories.
Adding Categories
To add a new product category, go to Products > Categories. Here you’ll see a list of existing product categories, if any have been created already. To add a new category, click on the Add New Category button.
On the next screen, you’ll need to enter a name for your category and (optionally) a description. You can also choose whether or not to display this category in your shop’s sidebar menu. If you have any existing product categories, you can also choose which one this new category should be nested under.
If you are listing products in WooCommerce for the first time, it is recommended that you start with a few basic categories. You can always add more categories later, but it is important to get the basics set up first. Once you have created your categories, you can add products to them by going to the “Products” page and selecting the “Add New Product” button. From here, you will be able to select the category or categories that you want your product to be listed in.
If you need to change the order of your categories, or if you want to add sub-categories, you can do this from the “Categories” page. Here, you will see a list of all of the categories that you have created. You can drag and drop them into the order that you want, or you can click on the “Edit
Editing Categories
If you need to edit an existing category, hover over it and click on the Edit link that appears. This will take you to a screen where you can modify the category name, description, and other settings.
