How Do I Make a Stream Overlay in Canva?

A stream overlay is a great way to spruce up your Twitch or Mixer channel. Canva is a free online design platform that’s perfect for creating stream overlays, thanks to its easy-to-use tools and wide range of templates. Here’s how to make a stream overlay in Canva:

1. Create a new Canva account or log in to an existing one. Head to www.canva.com and either sign up for a new account or log in to your existing one. Canva is free to use, but you’ll need an account in order to save your work.

2. Find the perfect template. Once you’re logged in, click on the Templates tab at the top of the screen.

Then, click on the Twitch Overlays category. You’ll see a variety of different options to choose from.

3. Customize your template. Once you’ve found a template you like, click on it to open it up in the editor.

From here, you can change anything you want, including the colors, text, images, and more. When you’re happy with your design, click the Save button.

4. Download your overlay. Once you’ve saved your design, click on the Download button in the top right corner. Make sure to select PNG as your file type, and then choose a resolution (we recommend 1920×1080).

5. Add your overlay to OBS or XSplit.

If you’re using OBS Studio:

  • Click on the + icon in the Sources panel and select Image from the list of options.
  • Click Browse and navigate to your stream overlay file.

    Click Open.

  • Make sure that the Width and Height settings match the resolution of your stream (1920×1080 by default).
PRO TIP: If you are not familiar with Canva, we highly recommend that you do not attempt to create a stream overlay. Canva is a very user-friendly platform, however, if you are not familiar with the program, it can be easy to make mistakes that could result in an unusable or poor quality stream overlay.

If you’re using XSplit:

  • Click on Add > Image from File in the Sources panel.
  • Navigate to your stream overlay file and click Open.

That’s it! You’re now ready to stream with a professional looking overlay.
