How Do I Make My Own Theme for Shopify?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 5:19 pm

Shopify is one of the most popular eCommerce platforms on the market today. If you’re thinking about setting up an online store, Shopify is a great option.

One of the best things about Shopify is that it’s easy to use and customize. You can create a unique look for your store by choosing a theme and customizing it to match your brand.

In this article, we’ll show you how to create a custom theme for your Shopify store. We’ll walk you through the process of choosing a theme, customizing it, and adding your own CSS and HTML code. By the end of this article, you’ll have a beautiful, unique store that reflects your brand identity.

Choosing a Shopify Theme
There are two ways to choose a Shopify theme: from the Shopify Theme Store or from a third-party provider.

The Shopify Theme Store is home to over 60 themes that are designed for all types of businesses. All of the themes in the store are responsive, meaning they will look great on all devices (desktop, laptop, tablet, and mobile). And they’re all customizable, so you can change the colors, fonts, layout, and other design elements to match your brand.

If you can’t find a theme that you love in the Shopify Theme Store, there are plenty of third-party providers that offer more unique and specialized themes. These themes tend to be more expensive than those in the Shopify Theme Store, but they offer more features and options for customization.

When choosing a theme, it’s important to consider your business’ needs. For example, if you’re selling products that are visually appealing (like clothes or art), you’ll want to choose a theme with large images and multiple product gallery features. If you’re selling products that are less visual (like books or software), you’ll want to choose a theme with more text-based features.

PRO TIP: If you are planning to make your own Shopify theme, be aware that there are a few things you need to keep in mind. First, Shopify is a paid platform, so you will need to purchase a theme from their website. Secondly, Shopify themes are not compatible with all browsers, so you will need to make sure that your theme works with the browser your customers are using. Finally, Shopify themes are not always easy to customize, so if you are not familiar with HTML and CSS, you may want to hire a developer to help you.

Once you’ve found a few themes that you like, it’s time to start customizing them to match your brand identity.

Customizing Your Shopify Theme
When you find a theme that you like in the Shopify Theme Store, click on the “Customize” button to start editing it. This will take you to the Theme Editor, where you can make changes to your theme’s HTML and CSS code.

If you’re not familiar with code, don’t worry! The Theme Editor has a “live preview” feature that allows you to see how your changes will look on your site before you save them. This is a great way to experiment with different design ideas without having to worry about breaking anything.

To start customizing your theme, select the “Edit HTML/CSS” option from the left-hand menu. This will take you to the Code Editor, where you can make changes to your theme’s code.

To edit your site’s CSS code, click on the “Assets” folder from the left-hand menu and then select “theme.scss.liquid”. This will open up your site’s CSS code in the Code Editor.

In the Code Editor, scroll down until you find the section of code that controls your site’s colors. To change your site’s color scheme, simply edit the hex codes for each color in this section of code. For example, if you want to change your site’s background color from white to black, you would change the hex code “#ffffff” to “#000000”.

Once you’ve made all of the changes you want, click on the “Save” button at the top of the page
