How Do I Make My Shopify Theme Local?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 4:54 pm

If you’re running a Shopify store, there’s a good chance you’re using a theme to help give your store its unique look and feel. But what if you want to make changes to your theme that are specific to just one location? In this case, you’ll need to create a local version of your theme.

Creating a local version of your theme is fairly easy, and it gives you a lot of flexibility in terms of making changes to your store. Here’s how to do it:

1. Log in to your Shopify account and go to the Themes page.

2. Find the theme that you want to edit and click on the Actions button.

3. Select Edit code from the drop-down menu.

4. In the Assets directory, find the file that you want to edit. For example, if you want to edit the CSS for your store, you would find the file named styles.css.liquid.

5. Click on the Edit button next to the file name.

6. Make the changes that you want and then click on the Save button.

7. Your changes will now be visible on your store!

Creating a local version of your theme is a great way to make changes to your store without affecting other parts of your site. It’s also a good way to experiment with different looks for your store without having to worry about breaking anything.

PRO TIP: If you are planning on making your Shopify theme local, be aware that there are some potential risks involved.

First and foremost, if you make any changes to your theme locally, those changes will not be visible to anyone else unless you push them up to your live server. This could potentially lead to inconsistency between your live and development versions of the theme, which could cause confusion and frustration for your users.

Additionally, if you are not careful, it is possible to accidentally break your theme while working on it locally. If this happens, you will need to either restore a backup of your theme or fix the problem manually. Either way, it is important to be aware that making changes to your theme locally can be risky.
