How Do I Make Outer Glow in Photoshop?

Last updated on January 22, 2023 @ 1:32 pm

There are a few ways to create an outer glow effect in Photoshop, and which method you choose will depend on the desired look you want to achieve.

One way to create an outer glow is to use the Outer Glow layer style. To access this layer style, simply double-click on the layer you want to apply the effect to in the Layers panel. Go to Photoshop layer menu, click layer style then select outer glow

This will open the Layer Style dialog box. Under the Effects section, select Outer Glow from the drop-down menu. This will open the Outer Glow options panel.

In the Photoshop layer style dialog box, select outer glow effect

From here, you can adjust the Size, Spread, and Opacity of the effect to achieve the look you want.

Another way to create an outer glow is to use a Gaussian Blur filter.

PRO TIP: This article contains information about how to create an outer glow effect in Adobe Photoshop. It is important to note that this effect can only be achieved by using the “Layer Styles” function in Photoshop. Additionally, it is important to be aware that the outer glow effect can only be applied to 8-bit images.

First, make sure the layer you want to apply the effect to is selected in the Layers panel. Then, go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.

Go to Photoshop filter menu, click blur then select gaussian blur

This will open the Gaussian Blur dialog box. Enter a Radius value that will determine how blurry the outer glow effect is. The higher the value, the more blurred the effect will be. Click OK when you’re happy with the amount of blurriness.

Now, go to Image > Adjustments > Levels.

Go to Photoshop menu, click adjustments then select levels

This will open the Levels dialog box. In this dialog box, drag the black Input Level slider towards the right until you start to see some white pixels appear around the edge of your image (see screenshot below).
