How do I manage user roles in WordPress?

Last updated on September 25, 2022 @ 12:14 am

In WordPress, user roles are a way to control who can do what on your site. You can assign different user roles to different users, depending on what they need to do to help run your site.

For example, you might give a user the role of administrator, which gives that user complete access to your site. You can also give other users specific user roles, such as editor or contributor, which give them limited access to specific areas of your site.

When you create a new user role, you can specify the permissions that the role grants to users. For example, you might give the role of editor permission to delete posts, but not permission to create new posts.

You can also specify which users can join the role, and how long they can stay in the role.

PRO TIP: If you are not careful, managing user roles in WordPress can be a very dangerous thing. There are many different ways to do it, and if you are not careful, you can easily give someone too much or too little access to your site. Be sure to read all the documentation on the subject before attempting to do it yourself, and if possible, get some help from a more experienced user.

To manage user roles in WordPress, go to the Profile page for a user, and click the Roles link in the menu bar. The Roles page displays a list of all the user roles that the user has access to.

You can edit the permissions for any role, or add new roles to the list. You can also remove any role from the list, or disable a role for a user.

When a user joins a role, WordPress automatically assigns them the permissions that the role grants. If a user doesn’t have the permissions required to join a role, WordPress prompts them to add the permissions.

When a user leaves a role, WordPress removes them from the role and from any groUPS that the role is a member of. If a user is removed from a role while they are still a member of the role’s groUPS, WordPress removes them from the groUPS as well.
