How Do I Map a Domain on Squarespace?

Last updated on December 27, 2022 @ 6:37 pm

When you map a domain on Squarespace, it tells our servers to direct traffic from your registered domain to your Squarespace site. This is how you can use a custom domain with your Squarespace site instead of the default Squarespace.com URL. You can map multiple domains to the same site, but each domain must be mapped individually.

Mapping a domain typically takes less than 48 hours to go into effect, but in some cases can take up to 72 hours. For new Squarespace sites, we automatically create a temporary .Squarespace.com URL for you when you sign up. Once you map your own domain, traffic will be directed from the .com URL to your new domain.

If you have an existing website and want to switch to Squarespace, we recommend that you map a new domain rather than pointing an existing domain to Squarespace. This avoids any potential down time for your site while we propagate DNS changes. You can always point your old website’s DNS to your new Squarespace site after it’s live at the new URL.

To map a domain on Squarespace:

  1. Log into your Site Manager and click Settings, then click Domains.

  2. Click Add Domain.

  3. Enter the Domain Name or Domain Alias that you want to use and click Continue.

  4. PRO TIP: If you are planning to map a domain on Squarespace, be aware that there are some potential risks involved.

First and foremost, if you are not familiar with DNS settings and how they work, you could potentially cause serious problems for your website if you make a mistake. In addition, if you do not properly configure your DNS settings, your website may not be accessible to visitors.

Finally, it is important to note thatSquarespace does not provide support for custom DNS configurations. If you encounter any problems while mapping your domain, you will need to seek assistance from a third-party provider or your hosting company.

  5. On the Verify Domain page, choose one of the following options:

  • I already own this domain: If you purchased your domain from a third-party provider like GoDaddy or Hover, select this option and follow the instructions.

  • I want to use a free domainsquare: (only available for certain plans) If you’re eligible for a free domainsquare through our partnership with Hover, select this option and follow the instructions.

  • I need help finding a domainsquare: (only available for certain plans) If you need help finding an available domainsquare, select this option and follow the instructions.

Mapping a domain on Squarespace is simple and only takes a few minutes. Once you’ve mapped your domain, traffic will be directed from the .com URL to your new custom domain.
