How Do I Open a DDS File in Photoshop?

Last updated on March 21, 2023 @ 10:24 am

DDS files are raster image files used to store textures and 2D images for video games. The DirectDraw Surface file format was developed by Microsoft and is used by a number of game engines, including the popular Unity engine. DDS files can be opened and edited in Photoshop using the NVIDIA Texture Tools plugin.

To open a DDS file in Photoshop, first, download and install the NVIDIA Texture Tools plugin.

Once the plugin is installed, open Photoshop and go to File > Open.

In the Open dialog box, select the DDS file you want to open and click Open.

PRO TIP: If you are trying to open a DDS file in Photoshop, it is important to first check if the file is compatible with Photoshop. DDS files can be created in a variety of formats, and not all of them are compatible with Photoshop. If the file is not compatible, you may see an error message, or the file may not open correctly.

The NVIDIA DDS Read Properties dialog box will then appear. Select your preferred settings, then click on the “Ok” button.

The DDS file will now be open in Photoshop. You can edit the image like any other raster image in Photoshop.

When you’re finished, go to File > Save As and choose a format to save the file in. We recommend saving it as a PNG or JPG file.

That’s all there is to it! With the NVIDIA Texture Tools plugin, you can easily open and edit DDS files in Photoshop.
