How Do I Open a Figma File Locally?

Figma is a vector graphics editor and prototyping tool – basically, the design version of Photoshop. And like Photoshop, it’s available on Mac and Windows.

But there’s also a third way to use Figma: through the web app. The web app is how most people use Figma, because it doesn’t require any installation.

If you want to use the Figma desktop app, you can only open files that have been shared with you. To do this, click the ‘Open File in Desktop App’ button on the web app. This will download a .fig file to your computer, which you can then open in the desktop app.

If you want to edit a Figma file on your computer, though, you need to export it as an image or PDF. To do this, select the ‘Export’ option from the ‘File’ menu. You can also export individual layers as PNGs.

PRO TIP: When opening a Figma file locally, be sure to check that the file path is correct. Otherwise, the file may not open correctly.

To open a Figma file locally, you need to first share it with yourself and then download the .fig file. Once you have done this, you can open it in the desktop app.
