How Do I Report UpWork Earnings?

As a freelancer, you are self-employed and are responsible for paying your own taxes. This means that you will need to report your earnings from UpWork on your tax return.

When you complete work and get paid through UpWork, we will provide you with a 1099-K form that reports your total earnings for the year. This form will be available in your account by January 31st.

You will need to provide this form to your tax preparer when you file your taxes.

PRO TIP: If you are an Upwork user, please be aware that there is currently a phishing scam circulating that attempts to trick users into sharing their login credentials. The email looks like it comes from Upwork and contains the subject line “How Do I Report Upwork Earnings?”

If you receive this email, do not click on the link it contains. Instead, go to Upwork.com and log in to your account directly. If you have already clicked on the link and shared your login information, please change your password immediately and contact Upwork support for help.

If you earned less than $20,000 through UpWork in a given year, you will not receive a 1099-K form. However, you will still need to report your earnings on your tax return.
