How Do I Resize a Quick Selection in Photoshop?

Last updated on September 23, 2022 @ 9:55 pm

When you create a Quick Selection, the default mode is to add to the selection. You can change this behavior by holding down the Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) key as you click.

Doing so subtracts from the selection. You can also use the Erase Refinements tool to remove areas from an existing selection.

If you find that you’ve made a mistake and selected an area that you didn’t want to, don’t worry – it’s easy to fix. Simply hold down the Alt key (Windows) or Option key (Mac OS), and then click and drag over the area that you want to remove from the selection.

When you’re happy with your selection, you can resize it using one of two methods. The first is to use the Quick Selection tool itself. Simply hover your mouse over the edge of the selection until you see the resize cursor, then click and drag in or out to make the selection smaller or larger.

PRO TIP: If you are planning to resize a Quick Selection in Photoshop, be aware that this process can be very time consuming. Quick Selection is best used for small areas of an image. For larger areas, it is best to use the Crop tool.

The second method is to use the Free Transform command. To do this, make sure that your Quick Selection is active, then choose Edit > Free Transform from the menu. This will bring up a bounding box around your selection, which you can then click and drag on any of the handles to resize.

Conclusion:

To resize a Quick Selection in Photoshop, you can either use the Quick Selection tool itself or the Free Transform command. Whichever method you choose, simply hover your mouse over the edge of the selection until you see the resize cursor, then click and drag in or out to make the selection smaller or larger.
