How Do I Set Up a Project on WiX?

Last updated on January 7, 2023 @ 8:53 am

If you’re looking to create a Windows installation package, WiX is a great tool to use. In this article, we’ll show you how to set up a WiX project and style text using HTML tags.

Creating a WiX Project

GREAT NEWS:

Exciting update! We've collaborated with Wix to offer WBI users with a free plan for all website creation needs - Explore the details here.

To create a new WiX project, open the Visual Studio New Project dialog and choose the “WiX Toolset” project type. You can also use the “WiX Toolset” project templates if you’re using an older version of Visual Studio.

Once you’ve chosen the project type, you’ll need to specify some basic information about your project. The first thing you’ll need to do is give your project a name. You can also specify the location of your project files and the solution name.

The next thing you’ll need to do is select the type of output you want to create. WiX supports a number of different output types, including MSI, EXE, and msm files. For this example, we’ll choose MSI.

After you’ve specified the output type, you’ll need to select the platform you’re Targeting. WiX supports x86, x64, and ia64 platforms. For this example, we’ll choose x86.

The last thing you’ll need to do before clicking “OK” is specify the root directory for your project. This is where all of your project files will be stored.

Adding Files to Your Project

Once your project has been created, you can start adding files to it. To add a file to your project, right-click on the “Solution Explorer” window and choose “Add > New Item”. This will open the “Add New Item” dialog.

In the “Add New Item” dialog, select the “WiX Toolset” template category and choose the “Component” template. You can also use one of the other available templates if you want to add something other than a component file to your project. For this example, we’ll stick with Component.

After you’ve selected the template, give your file a name and click “OK”. This will add the file to your project and open it in the Visual Studio editor.

Adding Text to Your Component File

Now that your component file has been added to your project, it’s time to start adding content to it.

Once you’ve added some content to your component file, save it by clicking “File > Save” or by pressing CTRL+S on your keyboard

PRO TIP: This guide is for setting up a WiX project, not for creating a WiX installer. If you want to create a WiX installer, see the WiX Tutorial.
