How Do I Set Up a Shopify Development Environment?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 8:26 pm

There are a few things you need in order to set up a Shopify development environment. First, you need to have a Shopify account.

You can sign up for one at Shopify.com. Once you have an account, you’ll need to create a new “app” from the Apps page in your Shopify admin. This is where you’ll specify your development URL, as well as a few other settings.

PRO TIP: If you are not familiar with Shopify development or comfortable working in a command line interface, this document is not for you. The following instructions are for setting up a Shopify development environment on a local computer. Please note that these instructions are for Mac OS X and may need to be adapted for other operating systems.

Next, you need to download and install the Shopify Theme Kit. This is a command-line tool that lets you work with themes on your local computer. Once you have it installed, you can use it to download themes from your Shopify store, as well as upload and update themes.

Finally, you need to choose an text editor. This is the program you’ll use to actually write code. There are many different options available, but we recommend using Atom, which is free and available for both Mac and Windows.

Once you have all of these things set up, you’re ready to start developing! Just create a new file in your text editor, and start coding away. When you’re ready to test your changes, simply upload your theme files to your Shopify store using the Theme Kit.
