How Do I Soften an Image in Photoshop?

There are a few different ways that you can soften an image in Photoshop. You can use the Smudge Tool, the Blur Tool, or a Gaussian Blur. Each of these methods will give you a different effect, so you’ll have to experiment to see which one works best for your image.

The Smudge Tool is great for softening edges and creating a more painterly look. To use the Smudge Tool, select it from the toolbar and then click and drag your mouse over the areas that you want to soften. The longer you drag, the more pronounced the effect will be.

PRO TIP: Please be aware that softening an image in Photoshop may result in the loss of detail or clarity. When softening an image, it is important to use a low amount of pressure to avoid blurring the image.

The Blur Tool is perfect for creating a dreamy, soft focus effect. To use the Blur Tool, select it from the toolbar and then click and drag your mouse over the entire image. The longer you drag, the more blurred the image will become.

A Gaussian Blur is a bit more technical, but it’s perfect for giving an entire image a soft, ethereal look. To use a Gaussian Blur, go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.

A dialog box will pop up and you can adjust the Radius to control how much blur is applied to the image. A radius of around 10-15 is usually enough to soften an image without making it look too blurry.

So there you have it! Three different ways that you can soften an image in Photoshop. Experiment with each of these methods to see which one gives you the look that you’re going for.
