How Do I Transfer My Domain From One Squarespace Site to Another?

Last updated on December 30, 2022 @ 7:01 pm

There are a few reasons you might need to transfer your domain from one Squarespace site to another. Maybe you created a site for a temporary event and now want to move it to a permanent home.

Or maybe you’re consolidating multiple Squarespace sites into one. Whatever the reason, the process is relatively simple:

    1. Log in to your DNS provider.
This is the company you registered your domain with, like GoDaddy, Hover, or Namecheap. If you don’t know who your provider is, you can look it up using a WHOIS search.

    2. Find your DNS settings.
Each DNS provider has different steps for finding and editing your DNS settings. Here are instructions for some of the most popular providers:

    3. Update your A record.
In your DNS settings, find the A record for your domain name (it may also be labeled as @ or *). Update the IP Address field with this value: 208.68.36.46.

Tip: If there’s already an A record with that IP address, delete the existing record before adding the new one.

PRO TIP: If you are planning to transfer your domain from one Squarespace site to another, please be aware that there are some potential risks involved.

There is a chance that your domain could be lost or stolen during the transfer process, so it is important to be sure that you are transferring your domain to a trusted and reputable source. Additionally, if your domain is not properly configured, the transfer could fail and you could lose your domain entirely.

Make sure that you take the time to properly prepare for and execute your domain transfer, and if you have any doubts or concerns, please consult with a Squarespace expert before proceeding.

    4. Save your changes.

    5. Now that your A record is updated, log in to your Squarespace account and open the site you want to transfer the domain to.

    6. In the Home Menu, click Settings, then click Domains.

    7. Click Connect Domain next to the empty field at the bottom of the page, then type in the domain name you’re transferring and click Verify Domain.

Note: You may see a message saying we can’t set up DNS records for your domain automatically. If so, follow these instructions instead of Steps 8 – 10 below.

    8. On the next page, select I’ll set up my DNS records myself (not recommended). Then click Continue.

    9. Under “A Record,” delete any existing values in both fields.

    10. Under “A Record,” type 208.36 in the first field and 46 in the second field.

    11. Click Save & Exit at the top right.

    12. Within 24 hours, we’ll check to see if we can detect DNS records for your domain at its current registrar.

    13. If we can find the records, we’ll send an email asking you to confirm ownership of the domain.

    14. To confirm ownership and complete transfer process:

In Domains, next to your domain name, click Transfer Status.

      a. Click Accept Auth Code.

      b. Check your email for a message from noreply@Squarespace.com with the subject “Action Required: Confirm Domain Transfer.”
Open it and copy everything after “AuthCode=”. Then return to Domains in Squarespace and paste it into the text field under Step 2.

      c. Click Verify Auth Code.

    15. Once verified, we’ll send an email asking you to confirm transfer of ownership with your current registrar.

    16. Depending on your registrar’s policies, they may contact you directly about confirming ownership via email or phone call.

    17. Once confirmed with both registrars (ours and yours), transfer usually takes 5 – 7 days to complete.

    18. After transfer completes, we’ll send another email letting you know that everything went smoothly and that you’re now able to manage DNS settings for your domain from within Squarespace.
