How Do I Use Shopify Webhooks?

Webhooks are one of the most powerful tools in the Shopify arsenal. With webhooks, you can connect your Shopify store to outside applications so that when certain events happen in Shopify, those applications are notified and can take action. For example, you can use webhooks to automatically trigger a refund when an order is canceled, or to send a notification to your shipping company when an order is placed.

Shopify webhooks are created in the Admin section of your Shopify store. To create a new webhook, navigate to Settings > Notifications. On the Notifications page, click Create a Webhook.

In the Create a Webhook dialog box, enter a Webhook URL. This is the URL of the application that you want to receive notifications.

For example, if you’re using Zapier to send notifications to Slack, you would enter the Zapier URL here.

Next, select the Format that you want your webhook to be delivered in.Shopify supports three formats: JSON, XML, and Form Encoding. JSON is the most popular format, but if you’re not sure which format to choose, select Form Encoding.

Now select the Event(s) that you want to trigger your webhook. For example, if you want your webhook to be triggered every time an order is placed, select Order Creation. You can also select multiple events by holding down the Shift key while selecting.

When you’re done configuring your webhook, click Save.

PRO TIP: Shopify webhooks can be used to automatically send information about events that happen on your shopify store to a specified URL. This is useful for integrating shopify with other applications, but can also be used maliciously.

If you are not careful when configuring webhooks, you could accidentally expose sensitive information or allow someone to take control of your shopify store. Make sure that you understand what each webhook event will do before setting it up, and only give the webhook URL to trusted applications.
