How Do I Use Variants in Shopify?

Last updated on January 14, 2023 @ 9:41 am

Variants give you the ability to offer different product options on your Shopify store. For example, if you sell t-shirts, you can use variants to offer different sizes and colors. To set up variants:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products. Click the name of the product that you want to add variants to.
  2. Click Add variant.
  3. In the Option1 column, enter the first option name (for example, Size).
  4. For each option, enter the values that you want under Option2. Enter one value per line. Option values can be up to 255 characters long.
  5. If your product has more than one option, then enter the second option name in the Option1 column (for example, Color). Enter the values for this option under Option2. Repeat these steps until all of your product options are entered.

When you create variants for a product, Shopify automatically creates a variant image for each combination of option values. For example, if you have a t-shirt with two options (Size and Color), and four values for each option (S, M, L, XL for Size; and Blue, Green, Red, Yellow for Color), then Shopify creates 16 variant images in total.

You can also change the order of your options by clicking and dragging them in the Option1 or Option2 columns. This changes the order in which they appear on your store.

If you want more control over which images appear when customers select different variants, then you can assign variant images manually.

Assigning variant images manually

You can assign variant images to specific combinations of option values.

This means that when customers select a certain variant from your product page, they see the image that you’ve assigned to that particular variant. For example:

  • If a customer selects a small green t-shirt from your product page, then they see an image of a small green t-shirt on that page.
  • If a customer selects a large red t-shirt from your product page instead, then they see an image of a large red t-shirt on that page.

Follow these steps to assign images to specific variants:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products (or press G P W). Click the name of the product that you want to add images to.
  2. Click an image under “Images” (or press I E). The “Variant image” pane appears on the right side of your screen.
  3. Click “Add variant image” (or press A V I). The “Add image” pane appears.
  4. “Choose an existing image” (or press C E I): Select an existing image from those already uploaded to your product.
  5. “Upload an image” (or press U P I): Click this link to upload a new image from your computer.

Click Save (or press S) when you’re done adding images. Reordering and hiding options(or press R H O) You might want to reorder or hide options depending on how customers usually shop for products like yours. For example, if most customers who buy pants from your store choose their pants based on color first and size second, then it might make sense to list color as the first option on your product page so that customers can easily find what they’re looking for.
To change the order in which options appear on your store:

From your Shopify admin go Products or press G P W . Click Edit next to Options . Drag and drop each Option into place under Product Options . When you’re finished reordering Options , click Save . (or press S) If there are certain options that customers almost never choose when they buy products from your store — for example, if most of your clothing customers never choose XL or XXL sizes — then it might make sense to hide those options so that customers aren’t distracted by them when shopping on your store. To hide an option from appearing on your store:

From your Shopify admin go Products or press G P W . Click Edit next to Options .Under Visibility , click next to each Option that you want to hide so that there’s no checkmark in its checkbox. When you’re finished hiding Options , click Save .

PRO TIP: If you are not careful when using variants in Shopify, you could end up with duplicated products, incorrect product pricing, and other issues. Be sure to carefully test any changes you make to your variants before making them live on your store.
