A smart object is a layer in Photoshop that contains image data. Smart objects are linked to the original file, and they preserve an image’s source content with all its original characteristics. You can scale, rotate, and warp smart objects non-destructively.

To fill a smart object with color or pattern:

  1. Open the fill layer dialog box by choosing Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color or Pattern.
  2. In the New Layer dialog box, choose a color or pattern.
  3. Click OK.

The fill layer appears in the Layers panel above the smart object layer. To change the fill color or pattern, double-click the fill layer thumbnail.

PRO TIP: If you are not careful, filling a Smart Object in Photoshop can result in some serious problems. For starters, you could end up with a file that is much larger than the original. Additionally, you could also end up losing some of the original quality of the image.

To apply a gradient to a smart object:

  1. Open the gradient fill layer dialog box by choosing Layer > New Fill Layer > Gradient.
  2. In the New Layer dialog box, choose a gradient.
  3. Click OK.

The gradient fill layer appears in the Layers panel above the smart object layer. To edit the gradient, double-click the gradient fill layer thumbnail.
