When you first open Adobe Photoshop, the default image size is 8.5×11 inches. But what happens when you need to make a file smaller?

Maybe you want to post your image online or share it with someone via email. Reducing the file size of your Photoshop document is easy, and there are a few different ways to do it.

To make a file smaller in Photoshop, go to File > Save for Web. This will open up the Save for Web dialog box. In the top right corner, you’ll see a drop-down menu that says “Original.” This is the file size of your document. Click on the drop-down menu and select “Smallest File Size.”

You can also make your file smaller by going to File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy). This will open up the same Save for Web dialog box as before.” Again, this is the file size of your document.

Click on the drop-down menu and select “Smallest File Size.”

Both of these methods will reduce the file size of your document, but they may also reduce the quality of your image. If you want to keep the quality of your image but make the file smaller, try one of these methods:

PRO TIP: If you are trying to make a Photoshop file smaller, be aware that you may lose some quality in the process. Also, make sure you save a copy of the original file before attempting to make any changes.
  • Export as a JPEG: Go to File > Export > Export As. In the “Format” drop-down menu, select “JPEG.” You can then adjust the quality of your image by moving the slider under “Quality.” The lower the quality, the smaller the file size.
  • Save as a PNG: Go to File > Save As. In the “Format” drop-down menu, select “PNG.

Reducing the file size of your Photoshop document is easy with these methods. Just remember that reducing the file size may also reduce the quality of your image.

When you need to make a Photoshop file smaller, go to File > Save for Web or File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy). Both of these methods will open up a dialog box where you can select “Smallest File Size” from a drop-down menu in order to reduce your file size without reducing image quality too much. You can also save your Photoshop document as a JPEG or PNG and reduce its quality in order to further decrease its file size without noticeable effects on image quality.
