How Do You Make a Spot Color in Photoshop?

Spot colors are often used in branding and advertising. They are colors used in addition to the four process colors (cyan, yellow, magenta, and black, also known as CMYK).

When printing with spot colors, a separate plate is created for each color. The inks are then mixed to match the color of the paper or substrate that will be printed on. This results in a more consistent color than process printing, which can be more difficult to achieve with CMYK inks.

PRO TIP: If you are not familiar with Photoshop, spot colors should not be attempted. A spot color is a premixed ink color that is used instead of, or in addition to, the standard CMYK inks on a printing press. They are mixed to achieve a specific color, and are used when a design requires Pantone colors or other special colors outside of the CMYK color gamut. If you do not know how to properly create and save a spot color in Photoshop, you could end up ruining your design.

Spot colors can be either premixed or custom mixed. Premixed spot colors are available from most print shops and come in a variety of standard colors. Custom mixed spot colors are created to match a specific color, and can be Pantone® or another custom color.

To create a spot color in Photoshop, first create a new layer. Then, select the color you want to use from the Swatches panel.

Finally, click on the “Create new fill or adjustment layer” button at the bottom of the Layers panel and select “Solid Color. ”
