How do you make a watercolor brush in Illustrator?

Last updated on September 24, 2022 @ 6:34 pm

Watercolor brushes in Illustrator are made by first creating a new Illustrator document with a size that will comfortably hold the size of your brush. You will then create a new watercolor brush by clicking on the “Brushes” tab in the “Artboard” palette and selecting “New Brush.” In the “Type” field, type in the name of the brush you would like to create, such as “Fan.” In the “Width” and “Height” fields, type in the size of the brush you would like to create.

PRO TIP: While watercolor brushes can be created in Illustrator, it is important to note that they will not behave exactly like traditional watercolor brushes. Watercolor brushes in Illustrator are best used for creating subtlety and texture, rather than for traditional painting techniques.

For the “Style” field, select “Standard.” Click on the “Create” button to create your new brush. You can now use this brush in your Illustrator document by selecting it in the “Brushes” tab and clicking on the “Use” button.
