Designing in Figma is a breeze, but there are still some things that can trip you up. One of those things is making an accordion.
An accordion is a UI element that allows you to expand and collapse sections of content. They’re great for hiding away extra information that users can choose to reveal if they want to.
Making an accordion in Figma is actually really simple, but there are a few things you need to know first. In this article, we’re going to walk you through the process step-by-step so that you can add accordions to your Figma designs with ease.
Before we get started, it’s worth noting that there are two ways to create an accordion in Figma: by using the built-in component or by adding your own custom component. We’re going to show you how to do both.
If you want to use the built-in component, head over to the Components panel and click on the ‘+’ icon. From here, search for ‘Accordion’ in the search bar and click on the result to add it to your canvas.
Now that you have your accordion added to the canvas, it’s time to start customizing it. The first thing you need to do is change the title of each section. To do this, simply double-click on the text and enter your own title.
Next, you need to decide what content you want to show in each section. For this example, we’re going to add an image and some text.
To add an image, head over to the Assets panel and drag-and-drop it onto the canvas. Once it’s in place, resize it so that it fits inside the section.
To add text, simply click on the Text tool and start typing. You can format your text using the options in the top toolbar. When you’re happy with your text, hit enter/return on your keyboard to create a new paragraph.
Once you’ve added all your content, it’s time to style your accordion. The first thing you need to do is select all of the sections by clicking on one and then holding shift while you click on the others. With all of the sections selected, head over to the left sidebar and find the ‘Layout’ section.
In the ‘Layout’ section, change the ‘Width’ from ‘Auto’ to ‘100%’ so that all of the sections are equal widths. Next, find the ‘Padding’ option and increase the padding so that there’s some space between the edge of each section and its content.
Now that your sections are equal widths and have some padding around their content, it’s time to add some dividers between them. To do this, select one of your sections and then click on the ‘+ Add after selection… > Divider’ option in the top toolbar.
This will add a divider between the selected section and the one after it. Repeat this process until there’s a divider between all of your sections.
The final thing you need to do is style your dividers so they match your design aesthetic. To do this, select all of your dividers by clicking on one and then holding shift while you click on others (you can also select them all by clicking on one and then pressing cmd/ctrl+A). With all of your dividers selected, head over to the left sidebar and find Find ‘Stroke thickness” in Layout under Tom cruise filmography change from 2px 0px.
