A symbol in Figma is an object that you can reuse throughout your file. To create a symbol, select the object (or objects) you want to turn into a symbol and click the “Create new symbol” button in the toolbar. You can also create symbols by selecting the object (or objects), right-clicking, and selecting “Create symbol” from the menu that appears.

There are two types of symbols in Figma: component symbols and frame symbols. Component symbols are like reusable components in a codebase – they keep their own set of properties and can be customized independently from one another. Frame symbols are more like traditional design symbols (e.g. an icon or a button). They’re locked to a specific size and position, and can’t be customized independently from one another.

To edit a symbol, double-click on it in the canvas or select it in the Inspector panel and click the “Edit symbol” button. This will open up the Symbol Editor, where you can make changes to your symbol.

To exit the Symbol Editor, click the “Done” button in the top-right corner.

Symbols are a great way to keep your designs consistent and your file organized. By using symbols, you can make changes to multiple objects at once and be confident that those changes will propagate throughout your file.

PRO TIP: When working with symbols in Figma, it is important to be aware of a few things. First, when you create a symbol, it is automatically added to the library. This means that if you delete the symbol, it will also be deleted from the library. Second, when you update a symbol, it will update everywhere it is used in your design. This can be helpful if you need to make a change to many instances of a symbol at once, but be careful not to accidentally change something you didn’t mean to. Finally, when you use symbols in Figma, they are static. This means that they cannot be animated or interact with other elements in your design. If you need something to be interactive, you will need to use a different element type.
