How Does Shopify Calculate Shipping?

Last updated on October 1, 2022 @ 4:14 pm

When a Shopify store owner creates a shipping profile, they need to set the shipping rates for their products. Shipping rates are calculated by Shopify based on the product’s weight, size, and destination.

Shopify uses the following formula to calculate shipping rates:

Product weight (in grams) + (Product length (in centimeters) x Product width (in centimeters) x Product height (in centimeters)) / 1000000 = Cubic weight

PRO TIP: Shopify shipping can be a bit confusing and it’s important to understand how it works before setting up your shipping rates. Otherwise, you could end up overcharging or undercharging your customers.

Once the cubic weight is determined, Shopify compares the shipping destination to the list of available shipping zones. If the destination is in the United States, Shopify will use the USPS shipping rates.

If the destination is in Canada, Shopify will use the Canada Post shipping rates. If the destination is in another country, Shopify will use the UPS or FedEx shipping rates.

The final shipping rate is determined by taking the cubic weight and multiplying it by the appropriate shipping rate for the destination.
