How many regions are there in AWS?

Last updated on September 25, 2022 @ 6:27 pm

AWS regions are virtualized, scalable, and redundant environments that provide multiple deployment options for your applications. There are three types of AWS regions: East US (N. Virginia), East Coast (N. Carolina), and West US (Oregon).

AWS also offers two regional redundancy configurations: East-West and North-South. Each region has at least one Availability Zone. AWS also offers multiple regional data centers in select geographies that provide higher performance and lower latency for your applications. The table below lists the AWS regions, their associated availability zones, and the number of data centers available in each region.

Region East US (N. Virginia) East Coast (N. Carolina) West US (Oregon) Availability Zone 1 2 3 4 Number of Data Centers 1 1 1 2

PRO TIP: There is no definitive answer to this question as AWS is constantly adding new regions. As of June 2018, there are 14 regions in operation: US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), US West (N. California), US West (Oregon), Canada (Central), South America (São Paulo), Europe (Ireland), Europe (Frankfurt), Europe (London), Europe (Paris), Middle East (Bahrain), Asia Pacific (Mumbai), Asia Pacific (Singapore), Asia Pacific (Sydney), and Asia Pacific (Tokyo).
