Shopify is a platform for businesses of all sizes to create an online store. It offers users a customizable platform, an easy-to-use checkout process, and a wide range of features.
However, one of the most common questions we get asked is: how much does Shopify cost?
The short answer is that Shopify plans start at $29 per month. However, there are also some other costs that you need to take into account, such as transaction fees, credit card rates, and apps.
In this article, we’ll give you a more detailed breakdown of the different costs associated with using Shopify. By the end, you’ll have a good idea of how much you can expect to spend on Shopify each month.
Shopify Monthly Plans
As we mentioned above, the starting price for Shopify is $29 per month. This is the base price for the Shopify Lite plan.
If you want to use Shopify to sell online, you’ll need to sign up for one of their paid plans. Here’s a quick overview of the different Shopify plans and their pricing:
- Shopify Lite – $29/month
- Basic Shopify – $79/month
- Shopify – $299/month
- Advanced Shopify – $499/month.
The main difference between the plans is the features and support that you get. For example, the Basic Shopify plan includes abandoned cart recovery and gift cards, while the Advanced Shopify plan includes advanced report building and real-time carrier shipping quotes.
If you’re just starting out, we recommend signing up for the Basic Shopify plan. It’s a good middle-ground option that gives you access to most of the features you’ll need to run a successful online store. As your business grows, you can always upgrade to a more expensive plan.
Shopify Transaction Fees
In addition to the monthly plan fee, Shopify also charges transaction fees on all sales made through your online store.
The amount you’re charged per transaction depends on which payment processor you use:
- Shopify Payments – 2%
- External Payment Processor – 2% + 20p per transaction.
If you use Shopify Payments (which is powered by Stripe), then you’ll only be charged 2% per transaction. However, if you use an external payment processor like PayPal or Authorize.net, then you’ll be charged 2% + 20p per transaction.
For example, if you make a sale for £100 using PayPal, then your total transaction fee would be £2 + 20p = £2.20.
You can see a full list of payment processors and their fees on the Shopify website.
Note: If you’re on the Advanced Shopify plan or higher, then your transaction fees are waived regardless of which payment processor you use.
Credit Card Rates
In addition to monthly fees and transaction fees, you also need to take credit card rates into account when budgeting for your online store.
Credit card rates are usually around 2-3%, but they can vary depending on which country your customers are in and which payment processor you’re using. For example, American Express cards have a higher rate than Visa cards.
Fortunately, there are some ways to reduce your credit card rates. One option is to use Shopify Payments (powered by Stripe), which offers reduced rates for all major credit cards. Another option is to use an external payment gateway like Authorize.net or PayPal, which also offer reduced rates for some cards.
You can see a full list of credit card rates on the Shopify website.
App Costs
In addition to monthly fees, transaction fees, and credit card rates, there are also some other potential costs that you need to be aware of when using Shopify – namely app costs. While most apps are free or have a free trial period, there are some paid apps that can add extra functionality to your online store. For example, if you want to offer live chat support or add product reviews to your store, then you’ll need to install an app. Paid apps typically cost between $5-$50 per month (or more), so it’s important to factor them into your budget when using Shopify. You can browse all available apps on the Shopify App Store.
